Myths about Miscarriages

Miscarriage means spontaneous loss of a pregnancy before the 20th week. Due to its sudden occurrence, a miscarriage is emotionally and physically painful than premature birth.

Miscarriage is the most frequent type of pregnancy loss that occurs when the fetus does not develop normally.

Women are to blame for miscarriage

Most miscarriage occurs due to factors that women could not control. Some of them occur due to unforeseen reasons, underlying health problems or abnormalities in the chromosomes.

There are medical causes whereby the fetus forms abnormal chromosomes. When the female egg and male sperm meet, each has 23 chromosomes that pair up to create embryo's genome. If this process goes wrong, it will cause a condition called aneuploidy or an abnormal number of chromosomes instead of pairs. For example Down syndrome the most common type of aneuploidy makes the embryo to have the copies of chromosome 21 rather than two.

Such genetically errors cause sporadic miscarriages and the mother has nothing to do with them even if she takes utmost care after knowing she is pregnant.

Bleeding or spotting during pregnancy is a sign of miscarriage

Bleeding is common during the first trimester in 20-40% of all pregnant women. Heavy prolonged bleeding can occur during a healthy pregnancy. A pregnant woman should not become anxious and conclude bleeding or spotting mean a miscarriage has taken place.

Having a miscarriage shows another one is likely

Getting the first miscarriage is an unfortunate happening but it does not put someone at more risk of having a second. The risk increases slightly after the second miscarriage. Women who suffer recurrent miscarriages should consult a fertility specialist who treats pregnancy complications.

Conception should only take place from 3 months after a miscarriage

It takes time for women to heal emotionally from the loss of forming baby .recent researches show that it is physically safe and possible to have a healthy full-term pregnancy in less than 3 months. It is safe to conceive in time little as a month after a miscarriage. It is important for women to wait until the blood test (serum beta-hCG) value goes down to zero. It could be early as a week after a miscarriage but mostly happens within a month.

Doctors may recommend a longer wait if a woman underwent a suction dilation and curettage (D&C) procedure to evacuate contents of the uterus after a miscarriage. The suction procedure can cause weakening of the uterus or infection or perforation hence it is important to wait until it returns to the healthy state. It is also essential to go for a comprehensive gynecological review to determine the state of the uterus and pelvic organs before trying conception.

Exercising during pregnancy can cause a miscarriage

Engaging in moderate exercises does not create a risk for miscarriage and it is even healthier than sedentary life. Most forms of exercises are safe for pregnant women if they are not extreme. Activities that cause much jerking, risk of falls or involve contact are dangerous. These include games like soccer, basketball, skin or horse riding. It is essential to maintain hydration. Thus women should drink a lot of water and avoid exercises that cause overheating when working out. Exercising in moderation throughout the pregnancy prevents gaining of excess weight and helps to cope better with labor. Exercising helps to increase physical fitness and makes the body more baby friendly thus reducing chances of a miscarriage.

No miscarriage is preventable

Most cause of miscarriage could be out of control but it is possible to prevent miscarriage that occurs due to smoking. Smoking more than 10 cigarettes in a day increases the chance of pregnancy loss even to women who inhale smoke passively when their partners take a puff.

Many women go through the entire period of pregnancy without many hiccups but miscarriage is still a significant risk. For example in the US statistics by American Pregnancy Association show that 10-25% of pregnancies end in a miscarriage.
