This is Our World: Art Is In Part of Our lives

The world we inhabit is a perfect place. We share this World with many different living species as well as different amazing things. Every human being who walks on this earth is uniquely designed from the other. The world in its entirety was created by the Creator Supreme, the perfect Artist and hence Art reflects in every of his creation. May it be humongous mountains or swollen rivers or as tiny an object as a microscopic amoeboid.

However, Art is at soul of every living being. It is part of evolution. We learn things raw teaching but we earn the credential of knowing the Art of something through years of involvement and experience. Art appears at the top of food chain of all the subjects and intellect. Science allows us to discover the very world we live in. Art answers the much noble questions like how to appreciate the beauty of little things. Art gives meaning, proportion and order to every phenomenon we come across in our lives. The Art make same musical instrument to generate virtually countless melodies. Science generates sound. Art transform sound into melody.

Art is part of our lives. We humans have been bestowed with heightened sense of imagination. Art put structure to colors, sounds, motions and words. Meaningless colors put in order on canvas of paper make it priceless. Words and emotions weaved into drama make it timeless. We cannot separate Art from our lives for it is native to human genetics. Humans are a part of an artistic program in them. Hence, we are naturally drawn towards art and creating it in whatever form we appreciate it.

John Dewey, an educator, philosopher and a psychologist writes in his book ‘Art as Experience’ that although the materials used by artists and scientists can be different yet the “thinking that goes into their respective production of excellence” is the same (Dewey). Dewey further sharies an example that artists think in terms of natural elements such as quality, color, tone, image, line, words and even dancing body. All these elements are native to human emotions and basic instincts (Dewey). No matter what the medium, human mind has the capacity to transform it into any form of art.

Art is a medium of expression. It is not just a piece of ornament or a painting hanging on the wall. Art is almost everywhere. It is an integral part of our lives scattered around us in many of its different forms. Art could be a song we like to hum or a lullaby we sing to our children to sooth them down or put them to sleep. Art is how one assembles a simple dinner table or even an office table. Art is how a child portrays his parents and itself on a page through colors and the irregular forms of bodies. Art is in the chair we sit or the bed we sleep in. Art is in the knife we hold or a spoon we stir with. Art is how we plan a party of plant a garden. Art is in the words of affection we say to our loved ones. Art is in the gift we wrap with our own hands or how we coordinate our dresses with our shoes and accessories. Art is in our DNA, in the constellations above us, in the colorful mountains that grow tall around us, in the rivers that flow, in the shellfish that sweeps on to the shore. Art is a Nature’s design and that design is different for everything in the universe.

Arts has many form and it is practiced everywhere around the globe in one form or the other. Arts have no boundaries neither is it defined by any geographical limits. However, different cultures, societies, and beliefs add to the versatility of art. Art has a unique flexibility and it can be bended according to any form or even an individual’s personality and emotions. One form or item of art is presented and interpreted differently by two different individuals. Art defines landmarks, religions, rituals, dance, music, dramas and even language. Gillian Morris-Kay, an expert in anatomy in genetics, associated with the Department of Physiology, in his article ‘The Evolution of Human Artistic Creativity’, published in the Journal of Anatomy. Morris writes, “There is no consensus on how to define art, although most definitions emphasize aesthetics” (Morris-Kay). According to Morris, art appeals to our aesthetic sense and we find them pleasing because we somehow perceive the world around us in terms of art (Morris-Kay). Ever since the human history began to be noted down, it was through various cave art that the archaeologists unearthed human history. The prehistoric man drew on the walls of the caves and it is through that art that we learnt so much about our ancestors. Their art, though a form of language for them, conveyed a lot about the prehistoric caveman.

One of the defining characteristics of arts has been the visual arts. Even today, most people recognize visual art is the only form of art. However, there are many forms and categories of art such as performing arts, visual arts, fine arts, literary arts, filmmaking, architecture and many others. On a closer look at these various forms of art, one cannot but be amazed at how arts is incorporated in our everyday life.

Art has existed ever since man learnt how to communicate. It has been regarded as original behavior. This can be observed in very young children who start making representations of the people and things around them. Thy have at this time so early in their lives taken no proper art education, yet they know how to draw lines and curves. Children draw instinctively. They find it easy to represent their emotions and feelings through colors. Art even helps in calming them down during their tantrums.

Moreover, art is believed to have a therapeutic effect in relaxing us. Many patients with anxiety and depression have overcome their disorders with the help of art. Lucy Bradley in her editorial titled ‘Importance of Art’, mentions how Art is included in the “healing and caring process” (Bradley) of the patients suffering from terminal diseases. According to Lucy, application of Art in healing acts as “music to quiet the brain” (Bradley) releasing a soothing effect for the patient (Bradley). Once they found the joy hidden behind colors, there is no stopping them. This creative process helps in tuning the mind towards focusing and in return, streamlining one’s emotions and feelings. Art is a way of releasing stress as it engages our mind in a positive way.

We need art in our lives not as a mere piece of hobby but because it is an integral part of our nature and or anatomy. Art is a chronicle, structured around our experiences. Art is born with us and ends with us. Everyone and anyone can be taught science, painting, drama and even the rules of battle ground and leadership. However, not everyone makes Einstein, Da Vinci, Shakespeare and Alexander the great. It is one aspect of our lives, which connects us with our past and the future to come.
